Two days after opening its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule with a 2-0 loss to Bellarmine at Louisville, hard times continued for the UW-Parkside men's soccer team.
The Rangers were edged 1-0 by Northern Kentucky, ranked No. 3 among NCAA Division II programs in a GLVC match at Wilder, Ky. The only goal of the match came at 85:13, when Jason Larkin scored from about 25 yards out just outside the box to the far post.
Northern Kentucky returned all 11 starters from a team that advanced to the final eight in Division II last season.
Parkside (4-2, 0-2 GLVC) was led by Victor Perez, who had six saves in goal. The Rangers had seven shots on goal to 12 for Northern Kentucky (6-0, 2-0 GLVC).
Women's volleyball
CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds won the College of Mount St. Joseph Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Walsh University Saturday at Cincinnarti, Ohio. Carthage's scores in the championship match were 30-28, 30-17, 38-36.
Carthage (8-0 CCIW), ranked eighth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division III preseason poll, advanced to the championship match with a 30-15, 30-11, 30-19 victory over Erie College.
The Lady Reds had opened tournament play Friday with victories over Transylvania and Capital.
Women's golf
Carthage placed fifth in the 13-team Monmouth College "Fighting Invitational" Saturday at Monmouth, Ill.
The Lady Reds finished at 365 - 20 strokes behind champion Wheaton. Carthage was led by Kelly Lazar, who tied for sixth with an 84, and Sarah Jung, who tied for 20th with a 91.
Illinois College's Meredith Robinson earned medalist honors with an 81.
Cross country
CARTHAGE: The Carthage women's team finished third Friday in the college division of the Bradley Universary Invitational at Peoria, Ill.
Olivet Nazarene won with 45 and Carthage scored 70.
Ashley Johnson had the best finish for the Lady Reds, taking seventh in 20:03.
Women's tennis
CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds swept doubles and had just enough to beat Augustana 5-4 Friday in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin match at Kenosha.
Taylor Gustafson and Gina Klein won at No. 1 singles and Beth Kaufman and Kristina Roglin won at No. 2 doubles to lead the sweep for Carthage (2-1, 2-0 CCIW). Kaufman and Gustafson won in straight sets at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively.
