To be sure, the Carthage College football team has one heck of a backup quarterback in Dan DeBoeuf.
Filling in for injured starter Brennan O'Boyle Saturday night at Art Keller Field in Kenosha, DeBoeuf set two school records in the Red Men's 35-16 victory nonconference victory over Lakeland (0-2). He completed 30 of 42 passes for 316 yards with four touchdown passes and no interceptions, setting Carthage records for completions and passing yards.
DeBoeuf broke the previous completions record of 28 set by Frank Ambrosini against North Central in 1989 and broke Jeff Tess' 1993 record of 314 yards against Millikin.
On Sunday, the junior from Lemont, Ill, was named the CCIW Offensive Player of the Week.
Carthage (2-0) finished with 408 total offensive yards - 77 rushing and 331 passing. The latter was five yards short of the school record set against Benedictine in 2005.
Nick Merchut caught eight passes for 93 yards and Andy Bures rushed for 81 yards on 13 carries.
Carthage closes out its nonconference schedule Saturday with a 9 p.m. game against Whittier at Whittier, Calif. There is a possibility O'Boyle will return for the Whittier game, but possibly not until the CCIW opener at Elmhurst Sept. 29.
