The Carthage College men's golf team opened its fall 2007 season by winning the Carthage "Buffalo Wild Wings Fall Classic" at The Club at Strawberry Creek in Kenosha.
Tyler Wollberg shot a 2-over-par 74 to finish second overall and led the Red Men to a 311 team total. The Carthage junior varsity team finished second, a shot behind, and Wheaton College, at 314, was third in the seven-team field.
Brett Harmeling of the Carthage JV earned medalist honors with a 1-over-par 73.
Rounding out the Carthage varsity score was Tim Gannon at 76, Dave Mikolaitis at 80 and Matt Carr and Anthony Milano at 81.
Men's soccer
CARTHAGE: The Red Men ran out of goalkeepers and lost 5-2 to St. Ambrose in a nonconference match at the Art Keller Field on the Carthage campus in Kenosha.
Carthage (4-3-1) took a 2-1 lead in the first half on goals by Doug Fitzgerald (his third of the season) and Chris Fidlow (his second). Kendrick Tyson scored for the Fighting Bees (4-3-2).
But Carthage starting goalkeeper Andrew Connor left the game with an injury and with no other active goalkeepers on the roster, Red Men basketball player Billy Jacklin filled in for the rest of the first half. Jacklin, who had not played soccer at Carthage, but did play in high school, left the game in the second half when he was hit in the eye with a ball. Junior varsity goalie Trevor Van Laanen and midfielder Kevin McGleam shared time in goal the rest of the way.
Tyson scored back-to-back goals in the second half, followed by goals by Michael Muchow and Garrett Alderson to give St. Ambrose the victory.
The Fighting Bees outshot the Red Men 13-8.
Women's soccer
CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds outshot the Fighting Bees 10-5 and beat St. Ambrose 2-1 in a nonconference match at Art Keller Field on the Carthage campus in Kenosha.
Debbie Koizlowski scored in the first half for Carthage (6-1) and Devon Wildfling scored in the second half. Jackie Peterson assisted on both goals.
Carthage lost the shutout when Amanda Wilford scored in the 86th minute.
