The UW-Parkside women's basketball team gave its home fans a nailbiter Thursday night.
Freshman Jadee Rooney hit a 3-pointer to break a 48-48 tie with 4:47 left in the game and the Rangers held off Lewis University for a 57-56 Great Lakes Conference victory at the DeSimone Gymnasium on the UW-Parkside campus in Somers.
Parkside's Brittany Hogen had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Rooney had 11 points and Brittany Beyer added 10.
Rangers coach Jenny Kenesie praised Hogen's recent play down low. That opened the game for guards like Rooney and Amanda Gibson, who had a game-high nine assists.
"She's really been a difference maker," Kenesie said. "She's stepped up her game."
After Rooney's 3-pointer, the Rangers extended their lead to seven points. But the Flyers' Jenny Turpel scored eight points during an 11-2 run to get the lead down to one. Turpel finished with a game-high 23 points, but missed a short shot with five seconds left and the Rangers held on for the victory.
Kenesie praised Turpel's ability to score despite the Rangers keying their defense on her.
"She was finishing extremely well against a tough defense," Kenesie said.
Parkside (18-8, 14-3 GLVC) closes its regular-season schedule on the road against the University of Indianapolis noon at Saturday.
PARKSIDE MEN: Dave Keane hit a 3-pointer with 3 minutes left in the second half to give the Rangers a 76-73 lead, but Lewis' Brandon Dagans scored 10 of his game-high 34 points to lead the Flyers to a 84-78 Great Lakes Conference victory at Somers.
"He scored in every way," Parkside coach Luke Reigel said. "He's a first-team all conference players and we didn't have an answer for him."
St. Catherine's graduate LaVontay Fenderson scored 25 points to lead Parkside.
