A fast start may keep Lennie Boresch Jr. around for a while in the United States Bowling Congress Masters tournament.
Boresch, a Kenosha resident who is a regular in Racine leagues and a Professional Bowlers Association member, led off his five-game block Tuesday with a 300 game and totaled 1,152 pins at AMF Bowlero Lanes in Wauwatosa.
With three of four squads completed Wednesday, Boresch was eighth with 2,239 pins in 10 games. He was 16th after Tuesday's first round of qualifying in the first PBA event, and major tournament, of the season.
Qualifying and double elimination match play continue at AMF Bowlero through Friday and the top four bowlers advance to Sunday's finals at Miller Park. The finals, which begin at nooon, will be televised live by ESPN. The winner takes home first prize of $100,000 and a two-year exemption on the PBA Tour.
Boresch, who has a number of PBA regional titles, averaged 230.4 over his five games and was just four pins behind PBA Hall of Fame member Walter Ray Williams Jr.
Derek Eoff of Greenfield, the USBC's Sport Bowling Cordinator, led the first round of qualifying with a total of 1,252. The top four bowlers totaled 1,200 or better.
The top 25 percent of the 486-bowler field (122 bowlers) made the first cut Wednesday night and the field is cut to the top 63 for match play after today's third round of qualifying. Defending champion Doug Kent received a bye into match play.
Two other Racine bowlers were involved in qualifying. With three of four squads completed in the second round, Tim Ruelle was 150th at 1,980 and Joe Crocco was tied for 162th at 1,972. Former Racine resident Chris Galovits was tied for 144th at 1,990.
Wald, Thoennes roll 300s
Les Wald Sr. rolled a 300 game Tuesday in the V.F.W. League at Castle Lanes. He finished with a 666 series.
n Monday night, Joe Thoennes led off his 712 series in the MGD Classic League at Plaza Bowling Center with a 300 game. He followed with games of 245 and 167.
n Also Monday, Kevin Keehan left a 10-pin and had to settle for a 299 game in the Danny Palms Classic League at Hillside Lanes. He finished with a 746 series.
Racine USBC BA meeting on tap
The Racine USBC Bowling Association will hold its annual membership meeting at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 4 at Paradise Lanes West.
All members of the RBA are eligible to attend. Five director positions on the RBA Board of Directors will be up for election at the meeting.
A 9-pin no-tap tournament will precede the meeting at 9 a.m. at Paradise West. The cost is $10 and interested bowlers should contact RBA secretary-treasurer John Knudsen at (262) 634-9773 or fill out a form available on the RBA Web site (www.racinebowling.org) and mail the form, along with a check for $10, to John Knudsen, 5718 Alburg Ave., Racine, WI 53406.
