Local colleges: Carthage beats St. Mary's in men's soccer

Greg Goldsberry scored his third goal of the season in the first half and assisted on Doug Fitzgerald's goal in the second half Tuesday night in leading the Carthage College men's soccer team to a 2-1 nonconference victory over St. Mary's (Minn.) at Art Keller Field on the Carthage campus in Kenosha.

The Red Men (2-2-1) outshot St. Mary's 14-11, including 11-5 in the first half.

Goldsberry scored on a cross and shot at the 39:30 mark. Joey Monegato assisted on the goal.

Andre Seckler scored at 53:20 to tie the game, and Fitzgerald scored the game-winner at the 68:37 mark, off Goldsberry's assist.

Andrew Connor made three saves in goal for Carthage.

Jim Schultz made five saves in goal for St. Mary's (2-2).

Women's volleyball

CARTHAGE: The Lady Reds, off to an 8-0 start, are ranked sixth in the first CSTV/American Volleyball Coaches Association Division III Coaches Top 25 poll released Sept. 11.

Wittenberg received eight first-place votes and 584 total points in the voting to surpass Juniata

(9-1) for first place in the poll. Juniata received 580 points in the voting. Carthage, which was ranked eighth last week, received 485 points.
