Life on the road hasn't been exactly pleasant for the
UW-Parkside men's basketball team.
The Rangers dropped their second straight road game Saturday, losing to Drury University 73-67 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Springfield, Mo.
The Rangers, who lost to Rockhurst Thursday night, are 0-2 in the GLVC. They are 3-2 overall.
The Rangers stuck with Drury (2-0, 5-0) in the first half and trailed only 30-28 going into the second half. But Drury gradually pulled away - despite the fact Parkside shot 47 percent from the field in the period.
"What happened was their best players made every big play down the stretch,'' Parkside coach Luke Reigel said. "We had our chances to make the big plays and we didn't.
"We just can't make the big shot on the road.''
LaVontay Fenderson, the former St. Catherine's High School standout, topped Parkside scorers with 16 points.
Fenderson made 5 of 11 shots from the field but was 0-for-4 from 3-point range. Parkside made only 8 of 27 3-point attempts.
Fenderson also led the Rangers with 10 rebounds.
Parkside had two other players score in double figures: Kyle Clark contributed 13 points and former Burlington High School star Brad Ferstenou totaled 10 points.
Parkside, which was ranked 24th in the NABC/Division II coaches poll after its 3-0 start to the season, was also hampered by a disparity in free throws.
While the Rangers were 9 of 11 from the line, Drury was 17 of 32.
During one stretch in the second half - from about 10:20 until 1:30 - Drury was not called for a foul.
Collins Harris led Drury with 22 points. Harris made 10 of 14 field-goal attempts.
Adam White and Steven Gum had 13 points apiece for Drury, which Reigel said is "probably the best team'' in the GLVC.
The Rangers' next five games will be all nonconference ones.
Women
DRURY 82, UW-PARKSIDE 68: The Rangers didn't take advantage of an outstanding game by Chelsey Schadler in losing a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Springfield, Mo.
Schadler made 9-of-12 field-goal attempts and was 5-of-6 from 3-point range en route to a game-high 29-point performance. Schadler also grabbed 10 points, which was tops in the game.
"She really had a nice all-around game,'' Parkside coach Jenny Kenesie said of Schadler. "She was feeling it early and we ran some plays for her. She played very well.''
Unfortunately for the Rangers, they had a couple of lapses in the first half that proved costly. That enabled Drury (1-1, 3-1) to move to a 41-28 halftime lead.
The Rangers, who had 20 turnovers in the game compared to only 12 for Drury, played better in the second quarter but couldn't threaten Drury.
Mackenzie Heise contributed 17 points and seven rebounds. The Rangers also got 13 points Kayla Ming.
Becky Flippin led Drury with 18 points, hitting all but one of her seven field-goal attempts.
