KENOSHA -- Who needs a technical swimsuit?
Certainly not Paige Weslaski.
The Case High School senior didn't need any kind of state-of-the-art suit to shine Saturday at the WIAA Division 1 Kenosha Bradford Sectional. She won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races in record times and was on two second-place relays.
Burlington Co-op freshman Anna Brooks nearly matched Weslaski, winning the 200 individual medley in pool-record time, anchoring the winning 400 freestyle relay and swimming a great race against Weslaski to finish a close second in the 500.
Brooks did do Weslaski one better, leading the Demons to their first sectional team title. Burlington Co-op scored 372.5 points and finished 101.5 points ahead of runner-up Badger/Big Foot/Williams Bay (271). Case was fourth (234), Horlick was 10th (114) and Park was 12th (70).
The only other Racine County event winner was sophomore Rachel Margis of Park, who won Friday night's diving competition with a score of 387.55 points.
Event winners automatically qualify for the WIAA Division 1 State Championships next Saturday in Madison. The next 18 best performances in each event in sectionals across the state also qualify.
Weslaski wore one of the now-banned suits, which glide through the water easily and have buoyant qualities, at the end of last season, but the records she set Saturday were all her. In the 200 freestyle, she battled most of the way with Burlington Co-op freshman Serena Wanasek, but pulled ahead and won the race in 1:55.00, breaking Heather Hall's record of 1:55.29 set in 2004 and breaking her own pool record of 1:55.45 set last year. Weslaski's time is just .14 seconds off the city record of 1:54.86 set by Brooke Patterson of Park in 1995.
In the 500, Weslaski stayed just behind Brooks until the final 50 yards, when she made her move. Weslaski won in 5:03.17, breaking her own pool, school and city record of 5:08.07 from last year. Brooks finished in 5:04.05, also below the pool record.
"I was really happy," said Weslaski, who already has her sights set on state. "I was pretty much right on my times and some were faster. It's really overwhelming that I'm doing so well.
"I've been wanting to get that (the 200 freestyle record) so much. I couldn't have asked for a better meet."
"I told her in the 500 that she needed to stay off Anna's hip," Case coach Frank Michalowski said. "At the Racine Invitational, she was way back and made her move too late. This time, she stuck with her."
Brooks said her team was feeling a bit nervous before the meet, but relaxed with music from the movie "High School Musical." That loosened up the Demons so they could take care of business.
"Before warmups, we were singing to try and calm our nerves," Brooks said. "When we started (the meet) with the relay (the 200 medley relay, in which Burlington Co-op finished second in 1:50.96), we knew we were going to have a good day. We're hoping all our relays make it."
The 400 freestyle relay of Wanasek, junior Sara Brooks, senior Morgan Briggs and Anna Brooks won in 3:38.77. The 200 medley relay (Sara Brooks, Anna Brooks, sophomore Brittany Ehlert, junior Kayla Olson) and the 200 freestyle relay (Olson, Briggs, junior Leah Schomberg, Wanasek) was third in 1:41.37.
"Everything fell together," said Briggs, who dropped 3.06 seconds off her previous best time to finish second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.48. "This whole season has been kind of crazy, but the whole team pulled together and everybody has been supporting each other."
"We had a high percentage of career bests," Burlington Co-op coach Ken France said, not long before he got the traditional dunking in the pool as the sectional-winning coach. "Anna, Sara, Serena, Morgan and everybody else rose to the occasion. It was phenomenal."
There were many impressive swims at the meet. Pool records were set in eight of the 11 swimming events.
Margis was just 1.1 points off the career-best of 388.65 she had at last Saturday's Southeast Conference Meet and had a close battle with senior Jaclyn Pitts of Kenosha Bradford. Margis led at each break in the action, but wasn't sure how close it was.
"It got kind of close," Margis said. "I didn't know who was going to win by the end (Pitts finished second with 374.45 points).
"I can't really complain with it - I made it and that's the main goal."
There was one point of controversy at the meet. Senior Lindsay Mikrut of Badger/Big Foot, the top seed in the 100 butterfly and third seed in the 200 individual medley, was disqualified when she was discovered shaving at the sectional site. That's a violation of WIAA rules.
