Just because Jamil Wilson, Antwon Oliver, Quinton Gustavson, Chris Hicks and Deon McLain, among others, have moved on, don't expect the excitement of last year's memorable season to diminish.
In fact, this season could be even more exciting for Racine's three high school boys basketball teams in the Southeast
Conference.
When you consider WIAA Division 1 runner-up Horlick will be drawing talent from last season's 18-2 sophomore team and Case and Park both return three starters, this shapes up as a vintage season in which any of the three rivals could emerge as the best.
"I think the conference will be pretty tough with the three Racine schools and the two Kenosha schools," Park coach Jim Betker said.
Here are capsule looks at Racine's three teams in the SEC:
Case
COACH: Steve Jaskulske, eighth season.
LAST SEASON: 12-10 overall; 9-7 in the Southeast Conference.
POSTSEASON: Lost to Whitnall 57-54 in a WIAA Division 1 regional championship.
RETURNING STARTERS: Mitchell Farr, Najee Farr, Alex Marzette.
ROSTER (x-denotes letterwinners): Seniors - Brandon Griffith, guard, 6-0; JaSchiro Willis, forward, 6-1; Juniors -
x-Mitchell Farr, guard, 6-1; x-Najee Farr, guard, 6-0; x-Alex Marzette, forward,
6-4; Sherman Barber, guard, 5-4; Jalen Riley, guard, 6-0; Christopher Anderson, guard, 5-11; Michael Brown, guard, 6-0; Rahjeem Smelley-Moore, guard, 6-0; Andrew Graceffa, forward, 6-2; Gerald Bester, forward, 6-1; Darius Cooper, forward, 6-2.
OUTLOOK: With the emergence of three returning starters and the addition of two transfers who will likely start, Case could make a major jump.
Najee Farr (10.9 points, 4.1 assists, 2.2 steals) is considered by Jaskulske to be the Eagles' finest point guard since Taron Barker led Case to the 1999 WIAA Division 1 championship. His cousin, Mitchell Farr (10.0 points, 3.1 assists) is a strong outside shooter and Marzette (7.4 points, 5.2 rebounds) will be an imposing inside presence.
"Marzette is a well-kept secret right now," Jaskulske said. "He's 6-foot-4, but he's real long. He's very athletic and he dunks the ball effortlessly. And he's very fluid and has a nice soft touch."
Griffith, who started for Franklin last season, should make Case's starting lineup and Willis also could be a starter. Among those providing quality minutes will be Riley, who transferred from Park, and Christopher Anderson, a transfer from North Carolina.
"We probably have the quickest team we've had," Jaskulske said. "The beauty of these guys is that every guy plays every spot. We're going to move the ball and take good shots. No messing around. And as soon as we score, we're pressing."
Horlick
COACH: Jason Treutelaar, seventh season.
LAST SEASON: 24-2 overall, 16-0 in the Southeast Conference.
POSTSEASON: Lost to Madison Memorial 56-41 in the WIAA Division 1 championship game.
RETURNING STARTER: Davontae
Mullen.
ROSTER (x-denotes letterwinner): Seniors - x-Davontae Mullen, guard, 5-10; Xavier x-Scaife, guard, 5-10; x-Eric Papelbon, forward, 6-3; x-Corbyn Thornton, guard, 6-0. Juniors - x-Idrees Razaa, forward, 6-2; Byron Belle, forward, 6-0; Ryan Niesen, guard, 5-11, Casey Robbins, guard, 5-11;
Jovan Watkins, guard,
5-11; Alex Verikas, 6-1, forward; Laquan Berryhill, guard, 5-10; Brad Carroll, center, 6-3.
OUTLOOK: Any team that loses two Division I players should be expected to have a leveling off in performance. But even though Horlick may not make it back to the state championship game without two-time All-State forward Wilson (Oregon) and Oliver (Iowa State), these Rebels appear capable of just about anything.
Mullen (7.0 points, 1.5 assists), who started the entire postseason for Horlick after Greg Morrissette was suspended, will be the one holding together this new cast. He held up well under trying circumstances last March and Treutelaar expects him to build on that.
"His ability to break people down and see the floor ... he's very quick with his first dribble and he's just got eyes in the back of his head sometimes," Treutelaar said. "And he's improved his outside shooting."
Ask Treutelaar who will be joining Mullen as starters and he'll say, "Boy, that's a tough one." But that's only because Treutelaar is still evaluating a talented group of players who have joined the varsity. Among them is Razaa, who went 3-for-3 from the floor and scored seven points in the Rebels' state semifinal victory over Oshkosh North.
"I'm encouraged by what I see with these guys," Treutelaar said. "Come January into February, we have the potential to surprise some people. There is no Jamil Wilson, but we have some guys who can score. It's going to take a little bit of time to get to the level we want to get to, but it's a work in progress and I think by come the end of this season, these guys are going to be giving teams fits."
Park
COACH: Jim Betker, fifth season.
LAST SEASON: 18-4, 13-3 in the Southeast Conference.
POSTSEASON: Lost to Milwaukee Hamilton 74-60 in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal.
RETURNING STARTERS: Stan McKenzie, Issaih Bridges, Trey Edwards.
ROSTER (x-denotes letterwinner): Seniors - Josh Beaton, forward, 6-4; x-Issaih Bridges, guard, 5-9; Josh Cameron, guard, 6-1; x-Tre Edwards, guard, 6-1; John Harris, guard, 5-8; x-Finest Marshall, guard, 5-10; Justin McGruder, forward, 6-5; x-Stan McKenzie, forward, 6-4; Isaiah Scott, forward, 6-2; x-Shane St. Pierre, guard, 5-10. Juniors - David Campbell, forward, 6-4; Dan Greathouse, center, 6-6; Frank Gutierrez, forward, 6-4; Bryan Kelly, forward, 6-2; James Orth, forward, 6-5. Sophomore - Taron Edwards, guard, 5-10.
OUTLOOK: As usual under Betker, there won't be any one dominating player. Instead, there will be a group of players who will be expected to share the ball.
"I think we have a lot of talent and a lot of depth, but it comes down to making sure we distribute the ball and play both ends of the court," Betker said. "I would say our athleticism and depth are going to be our strengths.
"There are quite a few players, and I'm talking double digits, who could start on this team this year."
The most established of those players are Bridges (13.7 points,, 4.6 assists, 2.5 steals), McKenzie (10.8 points, 6.4 rebounds) and Trey Edwards (11.2 points, 5.1 assists, 2.5 steals). But with the depth this team has, everyone will be fighting for minutes.
"Our team is going to be competitive and our guys have to realize there are a lot of guys who can give us minutes," Betker said. "As long as we have that same goal to win as a team, I think things are going to happen with these guys."
With Beaton, McGruder, McKenzie, Campbell, Greathouse, Gutierrez and Orth, Park has the most impressive height in the city.
