Nathan Radke scored a game-high 23 points, but the Union Grove High School boys basketball team lost to Greendale Martin Luther 54-53 in a season-opening nonconference game Tuesday at Greendale.
With about a minute to play, Ben Schreib scored on a layup and drew a foul from Radke for a 3-point play that gave Martin Luther a 52-51 lead. Radke fouled out on the play.
Caleb Beachem, a 6-foot-8 center, drew a foul on Union Grove's possession and made both free throws as the Broncos went back ahead 53-52 with 29 seconds remaining. Martin Luther ran down the clock to the last few seconds before Nathan Wingfield made a 16-foot shot.
After Union Grove called a timeout with one second left, Cody McClelland fired a full-length pass to Ben Roettgen, who, "got off a decent shot," Broncos coach Dave Pettit said. But Roettgen's shot just outside the 3-point line was just off the mark.
"I think we were significantly better than we played," Pettit said. "We missed a lot of layups and made some bad decisions with the basketball."
Beachem finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Broncos.
