SOMERS - Aaron Derner and the Waterford High School cross country team did it again Saturday.
On a windy, raw Saturday morning on the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course at UW-Parkside, the junior repeated as sectional champion and teammates David Bloxham and D.J. Hendrickson also finished in the top 10 to lead the Wolverines to the championship of the WIAA Division 1 Horlick Sectional.
Waterford finished second last year and will make its second straight appearance next Saturday at the WIAA State Meet at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. The top two teams and top five runners from non-qualifying teams advance to state.
The Wolverines scored 54 points, 17 better than runner-up Kenosha Tremper (71). Horlick was sixth at 151, Park was ninth at 228, Burlington was 10th at 250 and Case was 11th at 256.
Qualifying as individuals for state were senior Johnny Binzak of Horlick and junior Kevin Fallon of Burlington.
No girls teams or individuals from Racine County qualified for state.
Derner, who won the race in 16 minutes, 28.7 seconds, trailed Binzak (second in 16:45.6) by a few seconds at the midway point, but Derner passed Binzak at the two-mile mark.
"We were coming down straight down the hill and after that, I just went," Derner said.
His teammates had strong runs, too. Bloxham, a senior, was sixth in 17:08.5 and Hendrickson, a junior, was seventh in 17:08.8. Sophomore Kody Brand (15th, 17:36.4) and junior Taylor Ketterhagen (25th, 17:50.6) rounded out the Wolverines' top five runners.
"I wanted us to take first or second," Waterford coach Nate Schreiber said. "I'm ecstatic with the margin of victory because that came up front with our top three guys. And certainly it couldn't have happened without our 4 and 5 runners."
Binzak ran a solid race, but after Derner passed him, he just focused on qualifying for state.
"I had the mindset that I still have one more race," said Binzak, who will make his second straight state appearance as an individual qualifier and third overall. "I just had to qualify - it wasn't that big of a deal if I won or not."
Fallon was shooting for sixth or seventh, so taking fourth (17:02.3) was a bit of a surprise.
"That was crazy," Fallon said of his finish. "I wanted to sit in sixth or seventh and try to move up from there if I felt good."
In the girls race, Muskego and Tremper tied for first with 74 points, but Muskego earned the sectional championship on the tiebreaker - the sixth runner's finish.
Senior Lindsay Fons of Franklin won the girls race in 15:11.3.
Senior Emily Swigart of Waterford was passed just before the finish by senior Hannah Andrekus of Westosha Central and missed qualifying by .4 seconds. Swigart placed ninth in 15:58.7.
