The Waterford High School football team spread the wealth around Tuesday.
The Wolverines scored 47 unanswered points from the first quarter to the fourth and got everyone involved on both sides of the ball in their 60-14 victory in the first round of the WIAA Division 2 playoffs.
In the second round Saturday, Waterford plays Franklin, which beat Greendale 27-0 Tuesday in another first-round game.
Senior Beau Steffens started the scoring on an 18-yard run and Dylan Dessart scored on a 23-yard pass from quarterback Zach Fisher for a quick 13-0 lead. North answered with a 79-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jaban Hill to Kendrich Taylor to make it 13-6, but that's when Waterford (9-1) took over.
Steffens added a 3-yard run, his sophomore brother Greg scored on an 34-yard run and the Wolverines got a safety when North snapped the ball out of the end zone on a punt, giving Waterford a 28-6 lead after the first quarter.
"It was not much of a game," Wolverines coach Carey Venne said. "We did what we wanted to do. It was pretty much what we thought, but we hit hard, focused and the kids took care of business."
The Wolverines extended the lead to 45-6 at halftime on a 35-yard field goal by Phil Schuyler, a fumble recovery in the end zone by junior defensive tackle Kyle Baumann and a 10-yard touchdown run by senior Luke Christopherson.
Waterford scored three more times in the second half, including a safety when a blocked punt went out of the end zone, before North finished up against the Wolverines reserves with a 59-yard scoring pass. The game featured a running clock throughout the second half.
"We ran our offense until it got out of hand," Venne said.
Waterford ran for 248 yards on 25 carries, a nearly 10 yards per carry average, and held North to minus-9 yard rushing and just two first downs.
n The top seed in Waterford's bracket, Milwaukee Bradley Tech, was upset by unseeded South Milwaukee 28-21 in the first round Tuesday.
